Fear, Risk and Love

Moments with Mozart

Mozart is for eternity …

… and for the moment, says Israeli star conductor Omer Meir Wellber. In this book he gives readers access to Mozart’s music with the example of the three operas Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro and Così fan tutte, which he classes under the three essential themes of fear, risk and love.

In the 80s of the 18th century in Vienna, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the Italian poet Lorenzo Da Ponte crossed paths three times. Their collaboration gives the history of opera a new twist.

Rousingly and imaginatively, the author tells us how he discovers both of these two unconventional free spirits in a completely new way through Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro and Così fan tutte and how their works bring him to reflect on his own life: Mozart with his stirring, refined and enigmatic music and Da Ponte with his frighteningly astute observations of human weaknesses.

»Making his UK debut in the pit, Israeli conductor Omer Meir Wellber draws enthusiastic playing from the London Philharmonic in a beautifully fluent account of the score.«
The Guardian, 2014

»The London Philharmonic, seemingly energised […], played immaculately under the acutely sensitive baton of Omer Meir Wellber. Altogether a lovely treat.«
The Telegraph, 2014
